Trahan Winery: Small, Single Vineyard Wines, from Napa Valley, California
In 2001, When Chuck Custodio decided to follow his passion to enjoy all aspects of life, including work, he began his journey to learn the wine business. Neither Chuck, his mom, Elizabeth Trahan Berry, nor his then girlfriend, Janna Smith knew more than the fact that they all had farmers in their family trees. Later, it was discovered that the Trahan family has been in grape growing and winemaking in France. One friend commented, “ Oh, it’s in the blood.” After Trahan Winery’s first highly successful release, Chuck’s continuing goal is to produce outstanding, handcrafted wines of good value.
Chuck Custodio, “gave up money for passion,” leaving the corporate world to study the art and science
of wine. For four years, he commuted from San Francisco to the top of the Napa Valley, driving four hours
per day. Friends began to comment unfavorably on his dedication: “you’re crazy!,” , “I’d never do that!”,
etc. Due to his diligence, he was rewarded by the creation of Trahan Winery, and the release of his first
vintage – a 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – served at his June 19, 2004 wedding to Janna Smith,
his partner-in-life.
Janna Custodio continues her practice as a surgical nurse, as she loves helping people and is very
fulfilled by her job. Janna’s love and devotion to Chuck has led to her support of following his dream.
She is very family oriented, and is proud to be a partner of Trahan Winery, the family business. She is
excited to be learning about wine under Chuck’s tutelage and finds great enjoyment in her contact with the
great people she meets through wine events.
Elizabeth Trahan Berry (Liz), Chuck’s mom, was key in coming up with the family business focus of Trahan
Winery out of her long term interest in cooperative ventures. Liz, a 65 year old retired homemaker, is
passionate about earth issues and is gradually learning about wine. She has a great interest in organic
practices, including grape growing and winemaking. She is thrilled to be a partner in Trahan Winery with
Chuck and her new daughter-in-law, Janna.
